Man burned in explosion at Valley Proteins plant

A man was badly burned in a December 24 explosion at a Valley Proteins plant in Accomac, Virginia. The Valley Proteins plant shares a building with a Perdue plant.
According to a news report from WAVY, the explosion took place in the early morning hours, with emergency crews being paged to the scene around 3:23 a.m.
While the incident was called in as a potential fire, crews on scene said they did not find a fire. Instead, part of the building was collapsed due to a factory boiler that had exploded. Accomack fire officials believe the explosion was an accident.
According to the Accomack Fire Department, a 61-year-old man suffered from severe first- and second-degree burns. He was transported from Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. About 60 percent of his body was reported to have been burned, but no other injuries were reported.
