Russia lifts restrictions on pigs, porcine products from Belarus establishments

Rosselkhoznadzor, the Russian federal service for veterinary and phytosanitary surveillance, on January 9 lifted its temporary restrictions placed on pigs and porcine products from select farms and processing plants from the Brestskaya oblast in Belarus. The restrictions were previously imposed because of concerns of African swine fever in Belarus and in Russia.

Rosselkhoznadzor administrators lifted the restrictions, taking into account materials provided by the national veterinary services of the Republic of Belarus supported by description of the anti-epidemic measures taken in order to control African swine fever. It also took into account legal acts related to the issue as well as the outcomes of the inspection carried out by experts of the Rosselkhoznadzor Administration for the Bryansk and Smolensk oblasts in cooperation with the national veterinary services of Belarus from February 10, 2013 to May 10, 2013 at the Belarus plants involved in marketing of pork and its products.

Six establishments were affected by the restrictions.

Rosselkhoznadzor also reported that the previously affected processing plants may use pig farms located in the other oblasts of Belarus as a source of animals in case no temporary restrictions are imposed on them.

Rosselkhoznadzor will strengthen monitoring of products imported from these plants. Samples will be taken from ten consignments of products imported within at least three months. Rosselkhoznadzor has also made a request to the national veterinary services of Belarus to ensure monitoring tests of pigs and porcine products for African swine fever virus.
