The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has raised its forecast for U.S. broiler and turkey production for 2013, while lowering its projections for broilers and turkeys for 2014. The agency raised its forecast for poultry production in 2013 based off of data gathered from hatcheries in the United States, and it lowered the outlook for 2104 broiler and turkey production because soybean meal prices are anticipated to be higher in 2014 than previously expected.
In the USDA's World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, released on September 12, broiler production in the U.S. for 2013 was projected at 37.4 billion pounds, up from the August projection of 37.3 billion pounds. The forecast for turkey production was raised to 5.85 billion pounds from the August estimate of 5.82 billion pounds.
Looking ahead to 2014, the USDA in September called for broiler production at 38.3 billion pounds, down from the August projection of 38.4 billion pounds. Turkey production for 2014 was forecast in September at 6.1 billion pounds, down from 6.0 billion pounds forecast in August.
