Federal agents have intercepted dozens of chicken skeletons at the port of Baltimore, saying the skeletons could pose a threat to the U.S. poultry industry. The chicken skeletons came from China, where a high-pathogen form of avian influenza has been prevalent in 2013.
The chicken skeletons appear to be intended for educational use, as they were found in display cases and were accompanied by microscopes, test tubes, thermometers and other animal skeletons, the Baltimore Sun reported. Department of Homeland Security officials believe that if those skeletons were from chickens exposed to avian influenza, the virus could possibly spread to live poultry operations.
The importer is now required to export them, or they will be destroyed.
