US broiler-type eggs, chicks up last week of September


    Commercial hatcheries in the U.S. 19-state weekly program set 186 million eggs in incubators during the week ending September 29, up 2 percent from the eggs set the corresponding week in 2011, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's latest report.
    Georgia, Alabama and Arkansas continue to be the top three states for eggs set, placing 30.7 million, 26.1 million and 20.2 million eggs, respectively. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 85 percent.
    Broiler growers in the program placed 154 million chicks for meat production during the week ending September 29. Georgia has placed 25.97 million chicks, Alabama has placed 19.46 million chicks and Arkansas has placed 17.31 million chicks. Placements were up slightly from the comparable week in 2011, according to the USDA. Cumulative placements from January 1 through September 29 were 6.37 billion, down 2 percent from the same period in 2011.
