India poultry farmers lose birds to heat, humidity

The Indian poultry industry has lost 250,000 birds due to unfavorable weather conditions.
Poultry farmers in the north coastal districts of India have lost 250,000 birds due to heat and humidity, according to reports.
So far, the industry has lost Rs 50 million (US$1.11 million), and bird production is down 20% in the districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam. According to farmers, those who bought chicks at Rs 33 (US$0.73) two months ago have been unable to recoup even feed costs, earning just Rs 55 (US$1.22) to Rs 75 (US$1.67) per bird.

  2. Issues Concerning To Existing Poultry Cooling System

    Need of Cooling System
    The Chicken is a creature which keeps the body temperature more or less constant in general around 41.50 C. When the temperature increases, the chicken stands to warm itself. As a result, its body temperature also increases.
    When the chicken temperature reaches 42-42.50C, the chicken has to start to cool itself. The chicken does not transpire; therefore it cools itself by panting i.e. fast breathing. The breathing rhythm of a 2kg chicken is 30 breathing per minute, warmth causes an accelerated breathing. The chicken can reach 300 or more breathings per minute.
    At the beginning, the chicken inspires air from the space, loads it with the humidity of its body and by its expiration, and provokes the process of self cooling. This natural process happens while the humidity of the air does not pass a certain limit. If the humidity of the air is high, then the chicken load it which its humidity and therefore, cannot cool itself.
    Concept of Cooling – By means of Evaporative Cooling:
    Water can be used as a way of cooling chicken under given conditions:
    • It should not add humidity to air when the air humidity is already high.
    • It should not cause any damping of the litter.

    Existing Poultry Cooling Systems:

    a) Roof Cooling: An old concept and continuous operation of Sprinklers consumes more water and electricity. Can’t prevent the heat waves penetrating from the sides/length of poultry sheds.
    b) Fan & Pad System: High initial and operational cost. It is not effective in condition of Hot & High Humid conditions when mortality of birds is high.
    c) Misting/Fogger System: High initial and operational cost. Concept is to lower the shed temperature. Can’t operate the system in Hot & Humid conditions as it increases the Humidity during it operation and birds get more uncomfortable. Clogging of Foggers/ Misters is main problem due to water quality (Saline) and non utilization of proper filter for pumping unit. Most of the poultry farms where these were/are being utilized are on manual operation where the operation times is totally mismatched due to labors inefficiencies. Apart from this the installation and location of Fogger are not as per the need of poultry shed structures. Foggers are installed exactly on the top of the Cage with direction Up towards roof of shed and when being operated, the fog developed immediately get condensed into droplets while getting touched with mesh of cages. During this few birds get excessively wetted where as few birds can’t even feel lowering of temperature by the fogger.
    d) Environmentally Controlled System: Very High Initial & Operating Cost. Needs skilled labour to manage the system.

    Issues to be addressed related to Poultry Cooling System:
    • System should be suitable in Hot- Dry & Hot- Humid Climate.
    • System should be Automatic and have Sensor based operation- No manual operation.
    • System should have Low Initial & Operating Cost.
    • Low Maintenance and can work with Saline water also.
    • System should have the design parameters
    • Should have anti-leak device in case of upside down installation.
