US broiler-type eggs set, chicks hatched up 2% from 2010

U.S. broiler-type eggs set and broiler-type chicks hatched were both up 2% from 2010 for the week ending April 2, 2011, according to the USDA.

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-State weekly program set 208 million eggs in incubators during the reported week. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84%. Broiler growers in the same program placed 173 million chicks for meat production during the reported week. Placements were up 2% from the same week in 2010. Cumulative placements from January 2, 2011 through April 2, 2011 were 2.20 billion, up 1% from the same period in 2010.
