Canadian government permits development of genetically modified pigs

Environment Canada has given the go-ahead to Canadian researchers to raise the genetically modified “Enviropig” in a controlled research setting, according to Discover and CBS News. The genetic modification enables the Enviropig to produce phytase, which breaks down phosphorous, in its salivary glands. As a result, the urine and feces excreted by the Enviropig has just 35% the phosphorous content of waste produced by traditionally bred pigs.
The goal of the researchers is to reduce pollution concerns in pig production, but they will have to gather data for several more years before the Canadian or U.S. governments would consider approving the Enviropig for human consumption.
